Yoga

  • Yoga Classes - YMCA at One KX

Explore the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of yoga through our explorative range of classes. You will experience a variety of exercises and postures that strengthen the physical body systems, increase flexibility and enable you to better manage stress, alongside meditations that create a more balanced mind and relaxed state of being. All abilities are welcome to work with our leading instructors who inspire with their life learning.

Hatha Yoga

Our Hatha Yoga classes include both seated and standing postures, sometimes classical and at other times exploratory. These classes are rooted in the traditions of Hatha Yoga whilst at the same time embracing and exploring modern approaches to yoga and intelligent movement. There will usually be a strong emphasis on mindful awareness of the breath and the body, and the style and structure of each class will vary depending on the teacher.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga employs a multitude of techniques such as postures, breathing, concentration and meditation exercises. It also develops strength and flexibility. This method of yoga involves synchronising the breath with a progressive series of postures.

Tribal Fusion Bellydance

Tribal Fusion Belly dance, originating in California, takes inspiration from Middle Eastern dance, Classical Indian dance and Flamenco. With belly dance as our core foundation we weave through movements that release flow, softness and surrender, and those that encourage fire, structure, balance and strength. Classes include technique, alignment and a series of choreographic sequences accompanied by a hypnosis of repetitive rhythms and melodies.

Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, has been practiced and taught in the West since 1969. This form of yoga is a dynamic, powerful tool to establish and maintain an aligned relationship between the mind, body and spirit. Kundalini yoga harnesses the mental, physical and nervous energies of the body. Classes include breathwork, mudra hand gestures, mantra, body locks and postures to balance the glandular system, strengthen the nervous system, expand lung capacity and purify the blood.

Kirtan

Kirtan is the yogic practice of heart-centred singing. Join us to share in singing the profoundly healing sounds of the Sanskrit mantra, dropping our awareness out of our busy minds and into our hearts. Kirtan is from the path of Bhakti yoga (pure love and compassion), and is an adaptogenic practice (responsive to what you need) – whether that is to bring you to a space of calm or elation. It can be deeply moving and incredibly joyful. All Welcome.

Restorative Yoga

These classes encourage a deeper awareness of your physicality, incorporating yoga postures, breathing exercises and meditation techniques. You will explore and enhance your ability to move without causing pain or injury. This class is ideal if you have recurring pains or injuries that you want to understand and take control of, if you want to release tension or tight muscles or if you want to restore a sense of wellness through mindfulness in motion.

Vinyasa Yoga

A formulated sequence of yoga postures that connects breath with movement transition. The class includes a steady flow of alignment-based poses with breath awareness. Poses are sometimes broken down and variations offered for all levels of ability and experience.

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is also called yogic sleep - a deep relaxation that promotes finding balance and calm in yourself. The first half of the class has gentle mobilising moves to release tension before you lie in 'corpse' pose and follow a guided meditation. The meditation includes breathing, working with opposites and visualisations to create deep levels of awareness. Yoga nidra is considered to provide deep rest and whatever you experience is what you need, even falling asleep in class is ok.

Yin and Yang Yoga

The balanced practice of yin and yang styles of yoga. The yin style features long-held passive poses. These poses open the body up to more flexibility and chi flow through the subtle channels - encouraging a more contemplative, non-reactive quality of mind. A more active, dynamic, yang style of vinyasa follows, strengthening and invigorating the body and calming the mind.

Drum Circle

Drum Circle is a powerful and creative West African drum rhythm class. The perfect way of connecting through self-expression and cultivating a greater sense of wellbeing. Collectively and individually, Drum Circle is open to all levels of ability. Simon Rowe has studied traditional Ivorian rhythms for many years in the UK under the guidance of master drummer Henri Gaobi. His ability to support and lead fun, inspiring and engaging workshops for beginner and intermediate drummers is rooted in his sound understanding of the transformative benefits of people coming together in a drum circle to make music. These benefits include improved playing technique, concentration, musical appreciation, confidence, sense of wellbeing and creative expression.
